2012 HUB Mall shooting
Documents violence — written to inform, not to shock.

In the early hours of June 15, 2012, 21-year-old Travis Baumgartner, an armored-truck security guard employed by G4S Cash Solutions, shot four coworkers while the crew was on a routine circuit refilling ATMs at HUB Mall, a student residence and indoor food court on the University of Alberta campus in Edmonton, Alberta. According to Wikipedia's account, Baumgartner shot three coworkers with a .38-calibre revolver as they entered a secured vault area behind the ATMs, locked them inside, then approached the armored car and shot and killed a fourth coworker. All four victims were shot in the back of the head at point-blank range. Three of the guards — Brian Ilesic, 35; Edgardo "Eddie" Rejano, 39; and Michelle Shegelski, 26 — died at the scene. A fourth guard, Matthew Schuman, survived but sustained severe brain injuries.
After the shooting, Baumgartner stole the armored truck and its cash, distributing or leaving money at the homes of his mother and two friends. He destroyed his cell phone to avoid being tracked, swapped his vehicle's license plate for one belonging to his mother, and fled west toward Banff, where he discarded his weapon and vest in a river before heading toward the United States border, reportedly intending to reach Seattle, Washington. His friends, after hearing media reports, notified police and returned money he had left with them; he had also left $64,000 on his mother's kitchen table. On June 16, 2012, Baumgartner was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the Port of Lynden near Langley, British Columbia, while attempting to cross the border with $333,580 in cash.
Days after his arrest, Baumgartner confessed to an undercover Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer in a British Columbia jail cell, stating, "I did it all. I killed those people and robbed their truck." He was flown to Edmonton on June 20, 2012, and the next day was charged with three counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, and four counts of robbery with a weapon.
On September 9, 2013, Baumgartner pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder for the death of Rejano, two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Ilesic and Shegelski, and one count of attempted murder. On September 11, 2013, Associate Chief Justice John Rooke sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 40 years, until 2052. According to Wikipedia, at the time this was described as the harshest sentence imposed in the Canadian judicial system since 1962.
