Casepin · Terms
The terms, in plain language.
Casepin is a free, educational archive for adults. These terms explain what you can expect from it, what we ask of you, and the limits of what an archive like this can be — written to be read, not skimmed past.
The short version.
Casepin is an educational archive of documented criminal cases and the coverage that already tells them. It is intended for adults (18+), free to browse, and needs no account. Using the site or app means you accept these terms. Above all: the people in these cases are real, and we ask you to treat them that way.
- For adults 18+. Free to browse, with no account and no sign-up.
- A reference archive built from cited sources — not legal advice, and not a place to report a crime.
- Treat victims, families, and everyone connected to a case with dignity.
- Using Casepin means you accept these terms.
Who may use Casepin.
Casepin is intended for adults, and you must be at least 18 to use it. The archive describes serious crimes in plain, factual language and is not suitable for children. If you do not agree with these terms, please do not use the site or the app.
What Casepin is — and isn’t.
Casepin is a reference archive. Every case file is assembled from cited sources and written to be neutral, and every statement of fact is meant to trace back to a source you can check. What it is not matters just as much:
- It is not legal advice, and no substitute for a lawyer, a court record, or official guidance.
- It is not an investigative tool or a tip line. If you have information about an active crime, contact law enforcement — not us.
- Despite our standards — at least two independent sources per file — errors can still occur. When we find them, or you point them out, we correct them.
- Legal-status labels reflect the documented record at the time of writing. Everyone is presumed innocent unless and until convicted.
Acceptable use.
The archive exists to inform, not to enable harm. When you use Casepin, you agree not to:
- Harass, threaten, or contact victims, families, witnesses, suspects, or anyone else connected to a case.
- Publish private or identifying information about the people in these cases (no “doxxing”).
- Use the archive to interfere with an investigation or legal proceeding, or to pursue any form of vigilantism.
- Scrape the archive in bulk in a way that degrades the service for others.
- Pass Casepin content off as your own, or present content you have modified as ours.
What you send us.
Corrections, case suggestions, and reports go into a private moderation queue — nothing you send is published automatically. By sending it, you confirm you have the right to share it, and you give us permission to use it to review, correct, and improve the archive. Requests from victims’ families are prioritized.
Content and licensing.
Different parts of Casepin carry different rights:
- Case-file prose is adapted from cited sources — largely Wikipedia — and is shared under CC BY-SA 4.0 (linked below).
- Embedded and linked coverage — videos, podcasts, documentaries — belongs to its creators. We never re-host it; embeds load only when you press play and carry their providers’ own terms.
- Map data is © OpenStreetMap contributors.
- The Casepin name and mark are ours.
Accuracy, corrections, and removal.
Our sourcing standards and correction process are described on the standards page. We may correct, update, or unpublish any case file at any time. People directly affected by a case can request a correction or removal through the correction form, and those requests are prioritized.
Disclaimers and liability.
Casepin is provided “as is,” without warranties of any kind. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential damages arising from your use of the archive. Nothing in these terms excludes any liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.
Changes and contact.
When these terms change, we update the date below and note material changes in the app. To reach us — including to request a correction or suggest a case — use the correction and suggestion forms on the site. For anything about your data, see our privacy policy.
