    Andrew and Abby Borden were killed with a hatchet at their Fall River, Massachusetts home on August 4, 1892. Andrew's daughter Lizzie Borden was tried and acquitted in 1893; the case remains officially unsolved.

    Killing of Tupac Shakur

    Rapper Tupac Shakur, 25, was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting in Paradise, Nevada, on September 7, 1996, and died six days later. The case went unsolved for decades until Duane "Keefe D" Davis was indicted and arrested in September 2023 and charged with first-degree murder. On August 31, 2026, a Las Vegas jury convicted Davis of murder with use of a deadly weapon; he is scheduled to be sentenced on October 13, 2026.

    Journalist Lyra McKee, 29, was fatally shot on 18 April 2019 while observing rioting in the Creggan area of Derry, Northern Ireland; the New IRA admitted responsibility, three men were acquitted of her murder in July 2026, and no one has been charged with firing the shot.

Bryan Kohberger, a criminology PhD student at nearby Washington State University, was arrested that December and pleaded guilty in 2025, receiving four consecutive life sentences.

Murder of Mike Williams

SOLVEDTallahassee area / Lake Seminole, Florida–Georgia border · 2000

Jerry Michael "Mike" Williams, 31, vanished during a duck-hunting trip on Lake Seminole on December 16, 2000, and was long presumed drowned and consumed by alligators. His remains were found near Tallahassee in October 2017 and ruled a homicide. His wife, Denise Williams, and her longtime friend and later second husband, Brian Winchester, were ultimately tied to the killing; Winchester testified he shot Williams at Denise's direction, and Denise was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder.

    Murder of Sierah Joughin

    Sierah Joughin, a 20-year-old Ohio college student, was abducted while bicycling home in Fulton County on July 19, 2016, and found dead three days later. James Dean Worley, a neighbor with a 1990 abduction conviction who was not listed in any offender database, was convicted of her murder in 2018 and sentenced to death, prompting Ohio's Sierah's Law, which created a searchable violent-offender registry.
