On 5 June 2015, at approximately 17:55 local time, two bombs exploded at an electoral rally held by the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) in Diyarbakır, Turkey. The bombing occurred two days before the June 2015 Turkish general election, just before HDP chairman Selahattin Demirtaş was scheduled to speak. Five supporters were killed and more than 100 people were injured, though press accounts differed widely on the number of injured, with some reports citing figures as high as 184, 200, or over 400.
The HDP, a mainly pro-Kurdish party, had faced a pattern of attacks in the lead-up to the election, including arson attacks on party offices — Demirtaş stated on 5 May 2015 that 41 HDP offices had been targeted by arson since the party's founding — and bombings at the party's Adana and Mersin branch offices in May 2015 that injured three party activists. The Diyarbakır rally was held on the last day rallies were permitted before the election.
Initial reports suggested the explosions may have originated from nearby electrical transformers, but Taner Yıldız, the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, stated that a ministry investigation found the transformers had been tampered with from the outside. A further allegation suggested fragmentation bombs had been placed in dustbins in the area. The Attorney General of Diyarbakır opened an official investigation, and the Governor of Diyarbakır convened a crisis meeting. Initial casualty figures reported by Mehdi Eker, the Minister of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, cited two deaths at the time, with two additional victims later dying of their injuries in hospital.
The HDP held the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) responsible for the attack. A suspect, Orhan Gönder, alleged to have participated in ISIL's war effort and to have attended ISIL training camps in Syria, was arrested in Gaziantep on 6 June 2015. Following the 20 July 2015 bombing in Suruç, Şanlıurfa Province, an unidentified spokesman alleged that Gönder and the Suruç bombing suspect, Şeyh Abdurrahman Alagöz, belonged to an ISIL-linked cell called "Dokumacılar" (Weavers) targeting the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG). Separately, an alleged Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militant who turned himself in to Turkish Gendarmerie forces in Kars in July 2015 claimed the PKK had staged the bombing using suitcase bombs to boost HDP votes; this claim is presented in reporting as an unverified allegation.
Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu offered condolences to the wounded and described the bombing as a "provocation" occurring 48 hours before the election. Opposition leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu made a similar characterization. Demirtaş stated the attack was intended to destabilise southeastern Turkey and alleged that Hezbollah and ISIL forces had entered the country. By August 2015, suspicion for the bombing continued to focus on ISIL, according to available reporting.
