Illustrative

On the night of February 26, 2015, a series of shootings occurred at several locations within a three-mile radius of Tyrone, an unincorporated community in Texas County, Missouri, roughly 95 miles east of Springfield. Police were first alerted at 10:15 p.m. when a 15-year-old girl ran to a neighbor's home after hearing gunshots inside her house and fleeing. Deputies arriving at the scene found her parents, Garold and Julie Aldridge, dead inside. A quarter mile away, officers discovered Garold's brother Harold Aldridge and his wife Janell shot to death in their bedroom. Law enforcement then began checking every house in Tyrone and told residents to remain inside with doors locked.

Less than three miles from the first scenes, Darrell and Martha Shriver had also been shot inside their home. Darrell died of his wounds, but Martha survived despite being shot three times — in the hand, arm, and back — the last shot occurring as she tried to escape, leaving her permanently unable to use her left leg. She was able to identify the gunman as Joseph Jesse Aldridge while being transported to a hospital in Springfield. Martha also arranged for a relative to check on her son, Carey Shriver, and his family; that relative found Carey and his wife, Valirea, dead in their bedroom, while their son was found asleep and unharmed in another room. None of the crime scenes showed signs of forced entry.

The shootings were connected by authorities to the earlier death of Aldridge's mother, 74-year-old Alice L. Aldridge, who was found dead on a couch. Authorities believed the shooting spree began after Joseph Aldridge found her dead from an illness for which she had reportedly been under a doctor's care, though this connection was described as unconfirmed. An autopsy attributed her death to metastatic lung cancer, though her brother stated it was breast cancer; a relative expressed concern that she may instead have been smothered.

At around 5:30 a.m. on February 27, 2015, Aldridge was found dead inside a pickup truck stopped in the middle of a two-lane highway southeast of Summersville, in neighboring Shannon County, roughly fifteen to twenty miles from the shooting scenes. He had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A Rock Island Armory 1911 .45-caliber handgun, believed to be the weapon used in the killings, was recovered from the truck along with ammunition.

Aldridge, who was 36 at the time, was a cousin of the male victims and had prior federal firearms convictions that barred him from legally owning guns. Relatives described him as a recluse and noted tensions within the extended family, including a feud with one of the victims and a prior job rejection from Darrell Shriver. Missouri Governor Jay Nixon and Houston, Missouri, Mayor Don Tottingham both publicly addressed the shootings, offering condolences and noting the close-knit nature of the community.
