2017 Freeman High School shooting
Documents violence · crimes against children — written to inform, not to shock.

On the morning of September 13, 2017, a mass shooting occurred at Freeman High School in Rockford, Washington. At approximately 10:00 a.m. local time, as students were changing classes, a 15-year-old student brought a duffel bag containing an AR-15–style rifle and a handgun into a school hallway. According to reporting, the rifle malfunctioned when the shooter attempted to load it, after which he drew a handgun from his coat and fired into the hallway, striking several students.
A school custodian intervened by confronting the shooter and forcing him to drop his weapon, ending the attack. One student, identified as Sam Strahan, later died from his injuries. Three other students were hospitalized with gunshot wounds. The school was placed on lockdown and subsequently evacuated as law enforcement secured the campus.
The shooter was identified as Caleb Sharpe, born October 10, 2001, a student at the school at the time of the attack. Court documents indicated that Sharpe brought both the rifle and the handgun onto campus, though only the handgun was fired during the incident. Investigators noted that Sharpe had reportedly experienced bullying and social isolation, which were cited as contributing factors, though no single motive was officially established. Reporting also noted that Sharpe had an extensive online presence, including a YouTube channel, and had uploaded a video in June 2017 showing him and a friend simulating a shootout. A friend described Sharpe as having an interest in documentaries about school shootings and the television series Breaking Bad.
Sharpe was charged with aggravated murder, attempted murder, and multiple counts of assault with a firearm. In 2018, a judge ruled that he would be tried as an adult under Washington state law due to the seriousness of the charges. In 2023, Sharpe pleaded guilty to multiple charges, avoiding a jury trial. He was initially sentenced to a prison term of 40 years with the possibility of parole after serving a mandatory minimum period; this sentence was later changed to a mandatory life sentence with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
In the aftermath, the Freeman School District canceled classes and provided counseling and mental health services to students, staff, and families affected by the shooting. Vigils and memorial gatherings were held in the community to honor the victim and support those who were injured. The custodian who intervened was widely praised by law enforcement and community leaders for his actions in halting the attack. The shooting contributed to renewed national discussion of school safety, adolescent mental health, and gun violence in the United States.
