Illustrative

On the evening of July 22, 2018, around 10:00 p.m., a man walked along Danforth Avenue in the Greektown area of Toronto, Ontario, randomly shooting pedestrians before firing into crowded restaurants. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) identified the shooter as 29-year-old Faisal Hussain. The attack began near the Alexander the Great Parkette at Danforth and Logan Avenues, where six people were shot, including 18-year-old Reese Fallon, who was killed. A seventh victim was shot at the nearby Mezes restaurant. The gunman then moved west along Danforth Avenue, firing into the Pappas Grill restaurant and injuring one person, before shooting into Demetre's restaurant at Chester Avenue, killing 10-year-old Julianna Kozis and injuring two others. He crossed the street to fire into the Second Cup Coffee Co. and at people on the south sidewalk, wounding three more. After turning into an alleyway on Bowden Street, he reportedly spared one man and unsuccessfully attempted to shoot another. He then fired into the 7Numbers restaurant, wounding one more victim, before two police officers confronted him in a shootout. He was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound near Danforth Avenue.

In total, two people were killed and thirteen others were wounded, ranging in age from 17 to 59. Victims were transported to several trauma centres, including St. Michael's Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, and The Hospital for Sick Children, with some undergoing immediate lifesaving surgery.

Authorities identified the shooter as Faisal Hussain, who was born to parents of Pakistani origin. His parents stated he had been psychotic and depressed throughout his life, and former teachers and acquaintances described a history of mental health struggles, including a 2010 investigation by Toronto Police Service under the provincial Mental Health Act. His family had experienced the death of a sister and a sibling's coma prior to the attack.

Police initially investigated all possible motives, including terrorism, after unverified claims emerged that Hussain had visited ISIL-affiliated websites and a claim of responsibility from Amaq News Agency, which Toronto Police said had no supporting evidence. Following a year-long investigation concluded in June 2019, authorities were unable to determine a motive. Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders stated "we may never know why." Investigators noted Hussain's long-time obsession with violence, mental health issues, and a recently developed interest in incel ideology, including a copy of a mass shooter's manifesto found on his devices. His handgun, a Smith & Wesson M&P .40-calibre pistol, was reportedly linked by police sources to a 2015 burglary in Saskatoon and may have passed to him through his brother.

The shooting prompted public reactions from Canadian and Ontario officials, including calls from Toronto Mayor John Tory for a federal handgun ban, as well as community vigils and fundraising efforts for victims' families.
