Three-year-old Dennis Jurgens died in White Bear Lake, Minnesota in April 1965; his death was initially ruled undetermined but was reclassified as homicide in 1986 after his birth mother pushed for the case to be reopened. His adoptive mother, Lois Jurgens, was convicted of third-degree murder in 1987.

On July 6, 2016, St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez fatally shot Philando Castile, a 32-year-old Black school nutrition services supervisor, during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minnesota, after Castile disclosed he was carrying a licensed firearm. Yanez was charged with second-degree manslaughter but acquitted by a jury in June 2017.

On 15 October 2021, British Conservative MP David Amess was fatally stabbed multiple times at a constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. O'Shae Sibley, a 28-year-old gay dancer and choreographer, was fatally stabbed outside a Brooklyn gas station on July 29, 2023, after he and friends were confronted for playing music and voguing. A 17-year-old, Dmitry Popov, was later charged with second-degree murder as a hate crime and, in 2026, was convicted of manslaughter as a hate crime but acquitted of murder.
