2022 Greenwood Park Mall shooting

On the evening of July 17, 2022, a mass shooting occurred at the Greenwood Park Mall in Greenwood, Indiana. The shooting began at 5:56 p.m. EDT and lasted less than one minute. Three people were killed and two others were injured before the perpetrator was fatally shot by a legally armed civilian bystander.
Jonathan Douglas Sapirman, a 20-year-old resident of Greenwood, walked approximately one mile from his apartment to the mall carrying a SIG Sauer M400 semi-automatic rifle, a Smith & Wesson M&P15 AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle, a Glock 33 pistol, and more than 100 rounds of ammunition. He entered a restroom near the mall's food court and remained there for over an hour before emerging and opening fire. He first shot and killed Victor Gomez, 30, near the restroom entrance, then fatally shot Pedro Pineda, 56, and his wife Rosa, 37, at a nearby table. He continued firing, wounding a 22-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl. The shooter discharged his rifle 24 times during the attack.
Fifteen seconds after the shooting began, Elisjsha Dicken, a 22-year-old legally armed bystander from Seymour who was shopping with his girlfriend, engaged the shooter. From a distance of forty yards, Dicken fired ten rounds from a Glock 19 handgun, striking the shooter eight times. The shooter fired once and attempted to retreat toward a restroom before collapsing and dying. Dicken subsequently approached mall security guards, told them he had stopped the shooter, and waited for police.
A bomb squad investigated a suspicious backpack found in a restroom near a Dick's Sporting Goods store; it was later determined not to pose a threat. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department announced there was no ongoing threat at a news conference the evening of the shooting. Multiple federal and local agencies, including the FBI, ATF, Department of Homeland Security, and the Johnson County Sheriff's Department, assisted in the investigation. Greenwood's Police Chief James Ison said the ammunition used by Sapirman came from a Range USA store he had frequented since 2020, and that he had purchased firearms from stores across Greenwood, Southport, and Indianapolis. The motive for the attack remained unclear according to the source.
Officials and elected figures, including the mayor of Greenwood, the governor of Indiana, and other state and federal politicians, publicly commended Dicken's actions. Investigators noted Dicken had no police or military training and had been taught to shoot by his grandfather. Sapirman's father and older brother later released a statement through an attorney offering condolences to those affected, saying they could not explain his actions, and expressing no hostility toward Dicken.
Sapirman had no adult criminal history but a history of a school fight and running away as a juvenile. He had recently quit his job and was facing eviction. Prior to the attack he destroyed his laptop and phone. He was reported to have made extensive comments on Reddit over several years discussing mass shootings, though none indicated planning, and had an interest in Nazi Germany. The mall reopened on July 19, 2022.
