Illustrative

On 12 March 1983, during the Angolan Civil War, the rebel movement UNITA captured 66 Czechoslovak citizens in the town of Alto Catumbela, Angola. The group included Czechoslovak experts who had been sent to restore operations at the local paper mill, along with their wives and children who had accompanied them on the assignment.

Following their capture, the hostages were forced to march toward a UNITA base located approximately 1,300 kilometers away in the south of the country. The conditions of this forced march proved fatal for at least one member of the group: Slovak citizen Jaroslav Navrátil died on 19 April 1983, at the age of 37, while in captivity.

The release of the hostages occurred in stages over more than a year. In June 1983, the women and children in the group were released, along with seven men who were reported to be sick. The remaining twenty men continued to be held by UNITA for approximately another year, finally gaining release on 23 June 1984 — more than 15 months after the initial abduction.

The event later became the subject of media treatment in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic. In 1984, Czechoslovak Television produced the film "Angolský deník lékařky" (The Angolan Diary of a Doctor), directed by Vladimír Kavčiak, based on the motives of the abduction, filmed at the Barrandov Film Studio. Lubomír Sazeček, one of the direct participants in the events, later wrote about the experience in a series of books titled "Prisoners in Angola," covering the period from before UNITA's initial action through 25 years afterward, drawing in part on archival material. In 2009, a Czech documentary titled "Zajati v Angole" (Captured in Angola), directed by Ján Mančuška, chronicled the events of the abduction.
