Chinese Embassy in Bishkek bombing

On 30 August 2016, a vehicle rammed through the security gates of the Chinese Embassy in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, and exploded. The car, a Mitsubishi Delica, was driven by a suicide bomber who was the only person killed in the attack. Three Kyrgyz citizens employed at the embassy were injured in the blast.
The bomber is believed to have been Uyghur, an ethnic group living primarily in China's Xinjiang region, some members of which have for decades been linked to an insurgency against the Chinese state. A Kyrgyzstani government agency attributed the attack to Syria-based Uyghurs allied with the Nusra Front. The embassy bombing was reportedly ordered by Sirojiddin Mukhtarov, also known as Abu Saloh, described as commander of Katibat al-Tawhid wal-Jihad, a group operating within the Nusra Front alongside Uyghur fighters in Syria. The individual identified as the bomber has been named in sourcing as Khalilova Zoira, described as an ethnic Uyghur agent of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM); the name Zoir Khalimov was also given as an alternative.
In the aftermath of the bombing, three people were tried and sentenced by Kyrgyz authorities in connection with the attack. Khasamidin Ismailov was sentenced to 18 years in prison. Hikmatillo Abdulazhanov and Kunazim Mansirova, described by the Kyrgyz outlet Zanoza.kg as brother and sister, were each sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Separately, in July 2022, the Chinese embassy in Bishkek was targeted by a fake bomb threat, along with the Russian embassy in the same city, though this later incident did not involve an actual explosive device or casualties.
