Death of Mica Miller

Illustrative

Mica Miller, 30, drove from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to Lumber River State Park in Robeson County, North Carolina, on April 27, 2024. Records and reporting reviewed by local authorities showed that she bought a handgun that day and called 911 to say she intended to kill herself and wanted her family to know where to find her. A witness reported hearing crying and a gunshot near the water, and Miller was later found dead in the river.

On May 6, 2024, the Robeson County medical examiner ruled the death a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The sheriff's office said surveillance video, witness interviews, the 911 call, and physical evidence supported the suicide finding. A toxicology report released in June found no drugs or alcohol in Miller's system. Her family publicly disputed the ruling, but no one was charged with causing her death.

Before her death, Miller had made police reports and court filings concerning conflict, tracking devices, tire damage, and the breakdown of her marriage to John-Paul Miller. A federal grand jury later alleged that John-Paul Miller cyberstalked her from November 2022 until her death and made false statements to investigators. The indictment alleges conduct including placing tracking devices, posting an intimate image without consent, repeated unwanted contact, interference with finances and daily activities, and tire damage. These are allegations in a pending case, not findings of guilt.

John-Paul Miller pleaded not guilty on January 12, 2026, and was released on bond. On April 7, 2026, reporting based on federal court documents said additional discovery led the judge to move the pretrial conference to an unspecified date in June. No later fixed trial date was verified through July 12, 2026. He has not been charged with causing Mica Miller's death. The ongoing status refers only to the pending federal prosecution.
