Disappearance of Amy Lynn Bradley
Amy Lynn Bradley was born May 12, 1974, in Petersburg, Virginia, and grew up in Chesterfield County. She graduated from L. C. Bird High School and attended Longwood University on a basketball scholarship, earning a degree in sports psychology in December 1996. She worked as a lifeguard and later at Ruth's Chris Steak House, and was preparing to start a new job at a computer consulting firm.
In March 1998, Bradley joined her parents and brother Brad on an all-expenses-paid Royal Caribbean cruise aboard the Rhapsody of the Seas, sailing toward Curaçao. On the night of March 23–24, Bradley and her brother stayed up late dancing and drinking with the ship's band, including bassist Alister "Yellow" Douglas, who was seen dancing with her. The ship's keycard system recorded Brad returning to the family cabin at 3:35 a.m. and Amy five minutes later. Her father, Ron, later said he saw her asleep on the cabin balcony around 5:15–5:30 a.m., but when he checked again at 6:00 a.m. she was gone, along with her cigarettes and lighter. Three witnesses reported seeing Bradley with Douglas on the upper deck between 5:30 and 5:45 a.m., including an account that he handed her a drink; witnesses said the two arrived together by elevator and that Douglas was later seen leaving alone.
The cruise line delayed a ship-wide announcement until 7:50 a.m., after most passengers had disembarked, a delay that has been described as potentially damaging to the search. The Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard conducted a four-day search using helicopters and a radar plane, finding no evidence. The FBI interviewed and polygraphed Douglas, who was reported to have passed the test; he denied any knowledge of Bradley's disappearance. Investigators stated there was no evidence that Bradley, a trained lifeguard, fell overboard, was pushed, or died by suicide.
In the years following, several unconfirmed sightings were reported, including a Curaçao cab driver's account, two Canadian scuba divers who described seeing a woman resembling Bradley with two men at a Curaçao beach in 1998, a U.S. Navy petty officer's 1999 account of encountering a woman identifying herself as Amy Bradley at a Curaçao brothel, a 2003 San Francisco sighting, and a 2005 Barbados restroom encounter. None of these sightings were corroborated by authorities. In 1999, a man falsely claiming to be a former Special Forces officer defrauded the Bradley family and a missing children's organization of over $200,000 by claiming he could rescue Bradley; he was later convicted of mail fraud and sentenced to five years in prison. In 2005, photographs suggesting Bradley may have been trafficked were shown on the Dr. Phil show, but the FBI could not determine their authenticity. A human jawbone found on an Aruba beach in 2010 was tested and excluded as belonging to Natalee Holloway, but no testing linked it to Bradley.
Bradley was declared legally dead in absentia on March 24, 2010, though no body was ever recovered and no definitive conclusion was reached about her fate. The FBI continues to offer a reward for information, and the case has been featured on numerous television programs and podcasts, including a 2025 Netflix documentary series.
