On 13 March 2016, three armed gunmen opened fire at a beach resort in Grand-Bassam, Ivory Coast, killing at least 19 people and injuring 33 others. The attackers targeted the Étoile du Sud hotel, which, according to Agence France-Presse, was occupied by numerous expatriates at the time. Officials stated that 15 civilians and three special forces soldiers were killed in the attack.

The assailants were described as African men armed with Kalashnikov rifles and grenade belts, dressed in casual clothes and balaclavas. A shootout took place between the attackers and police as the assailants reached the nearby La Paillote Hotel. Army personnel evacuated local residents and tourists from the beach to nearby hotels, which were temporarily placed on lockdown. The Associated Press quoted government officials as saying that security forces had killed six armed men. Witnesses reported that the attackers shouted "Allahu Akbar" during the assault.

An American embassy delegation was present in Grand-Bassam on the day of the attack, but the US Embassy in Abidjan stated on Twitter that there was no evidence US citizens were targeted, nor any confirmed reports of US citizens being harmed. French authorities had reportedly warned both Ivory Coast and Senegal weeks earlier about the danger of a terrorist attack in the region.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and al-Mourabitoun claimed responsibility for the attack. On 17 March 2016, AQIM released the names of the attackers as Hamza al-Fulani and Abu Adam al-Ansari, both from al-Mourabitoun, and Abderrahmane al-Fulani, described as being from the "Emirate of the Desert." The attack was noted at the time as the third violent assault on a tourism resort in West Africa within a four-month period.

Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara, visiting the site, described the attacks as cowardly and stated they would not be tolerated. International reactions followed from several governments, including Canada, France, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States, each condemning the attack and expressing condolences to victims and their families. French President François Hollande specifically noted the death of at least ten civilians, including at least one French national, along with security force members, and pledged French logistical and intelligence support to Ivory Coast's response.
