Greenfield University kidnapping

On the evening of 20 April 2021, at approximately 8:15 pm local time, suspected armed bandits attacked Greenfield University in Kasarami village, Chikun Local Government Area, Kaduna State, Nigeria. The attackers infiltrated the institution in large numbers, abducting at least 20 students and 2 staff members. During the attack, one member of staff was killed. Police authorities confirmed the abduction. The kidnappers subsequently demanded a ransom of ₦800 million for the release of the captives.
This attack was notable in the context of a wider pattern of kidnappings targeting academic institutions in Nigeria. It was the fourth kidnapping from an academic institution in the country in 2021, and the fifth since December 2020. It occurred five weeks and six days after the Afaka kidnapping, in which 39 students were abducted.
While in captivity, the kidnappers killed several of the abducted students. On 23 April 2021, three students were killed; their bodies were later found in Kwanan Bature village, near the university. On 26 April 2021, two more kidnapped students were killed by their captors.
Releases of the captives occurred over the following weeks. On 1 May 2021, one abducted student was released by the bandits after his parents reportedly paid an undisclosed ransom. On 29 May 2021, after 40 days in captivity, the remaining 14 students were freed. Their parents stated that they had paid a ransom of ₦150 million along with eight brand-new motorcycles to secure the release.
The case remains part of a broader pattern of kidnappings in Nigeria targeting schools and universities during this period, alongside other incidents such as the Afaka, Kagara, Kankara, Makurdi, and Zamfara kidnappings.
