Murder of Saqib Hussain and Mohammed Hashim Ijazuddin

Social media influencer Mahek Bukhari and her mother Ansreen Bukhari were convicted of murdering Saqib Hussain and Mohammed Hashim Ijazuddin, who died after being chased and forced off the A46 in Leicestershire in February 2022.

Illustrative

Mahek Bukhari, a British social media influencer known online as May B, was convicted in 2023 alongside her mother, Ansreen Bukhari, of the murders of Saqib Hussain, 19, and his friend Mohammed Hashim Ijazuddin. The two men died on 11 February 2022 after their car was pursued along the A46 dual carriageway near Leicester and forced off the road at high speed.

According to evidence presented at trial, Ansreen Bukhari had been involved in a relationship with Hussain that began in early 2019, when he was 18, and ended after approximately three years. Following the relationship's end, Hussain began contacting Ansreen with demands for money, threatening to share intimate photographs and videos of their relationship with her husband and son unless he was paid £3,000. The prosecution said these threats caused significant distress to Ansreen, and that Mahek Bukhari became involved after learning of the blackmail. She reportedly messaged friends suggesting she would "get him jumped," though she denied intending to cause serious harm.

On the night of 11 February 2022, Hussain and Ijazuddin travelled from Banbury, Oxfordshire, to Leicester believing they were going to meet Ansreen to resolve the dispute over money. Instead, Bukhari, her mother, and several associates arranged to confront the men in a Tesco car park in Hamilton, Leicester. When the two men arrived, a car chase began involving two vehicles driven by associates of Bukhari — an Audi TT and a Seat Leon. The victims' Škoda Fabia was pursued at speeds exceeding 100 mph before it struck the central reservation, split in two and caught fire, killing both men instantly.

A ten-week trial at Leicester Crown Court concluded in August 2023. The jury convicted Mahek and Ansreen Bukhari of two counts of murder. Four other defendants were convicted of related offences, two of murder and three of manslaughter. On 1 September 2023, Mahek Bukhari was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 31 years and 8 months.

In October 2025, the Court of Appeal reduced Mahek Bukhari's minimum term to 26 years and 285 days, finding the original sentence "manifestly excessive" in light of her age and immaturity at the time of the offence. The court also noted that new evidence concerning Hussain's threats to release explicit material involving Ansreen had not been properly reflected in the original minimum term. Bukhari will be eligible for parole in 2049.
