Murder of Gemma Hayter

Gemma Hayter (13 September 1982 – 8 August 2010) was an English disabled woman who was tortured and killed in Rugby, Warwickshire, on 8 August 2010. As a child, Hayter was found to be autistic, though she was never formally diagnosed; her family suspected she had a mental disability. At age 14 she began attending a school for disabled students, and as an adult she sought assistance from local government for employment and general welfare support. An evaluator later determined she was not autistic.
Hayter had formed friendships with five people from Rugby: Daniel Newstead, his girlfriend Chantelle Booth, Joe Boyer, Duncan Edwards, and Jessica Lynas. Newstead and Booth had reportedly asked her to store illegal drugs in her flat and to steal items for them. On 7 August 2010, Hayter made a joke about Booth being underage during a visit to a pub; the incident was shared via PubWatch, resulting in the group being banned from local drinking establishments. The group reacted with anger toward Hayter.
The attack began the following day, 8 August 2010, when Hayter visited Booth's flat. She was assaulted and abused over a period of hours. The group then told her she was being taken home, but instead took her to a railway embankment, where she was killed. Hayter's body was found on 9 August 2010.
Newstead, Booth, and Boyer were convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, aged 20, 22, and 18 respectively at sentencing, with minimum tariffs of 20, 21, and 18 years. Edwards and Lynas were convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 15 and 13 years respectively; both were 19 at sentencing. All five were sentenced at the Old Bailey, with the BBC describing the sentences as "longer than expected."
Following the case, Warwickshire authorities produced a serious case review, which concluded that Hayter had been identifiable as at risk and recommended that relevant agencies exchange information to help prevent similar incidents. Hayter's parents believed local authorities had not done enough to care for her. A BBC Three documentary about the murder, titled "Gemma: Murdered By Friends" (also referenced as "Gemma: My Murder"), was later produced. As of 2017, Jessica Lynas was reported to be held at HM Prison Foston Hall.
