Murder of Katie Autry

Melissa Kaye “Katie” Autry was an 18-year-old freshman living in Poland Hall at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. During the early hours of May 4, 2003, she returned to her dormitory after a fraternity party. She was assaulted in her room and set on fire, suffering severe burns. Autry died three days later at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. A Kentucky appellate decision recounting a related civil suit records the attack and her death. Authorities charged Stephen Soules and Lucas Goodrum. In March 2004, Soules pleaded guilty in Warren Circuit Court to charges including murder, rape, and arson. The plea agreement required him to testify in Goodrum's case and removed the death penalty as a possible sentence. Soules received life imprisonment without parole, a sentence later noted in a federal habeas decision. Goodrum maintained his innocence and went to trial after the case was moved to Daviess County. On March 21, 2005, jurors found him not guilty of murder, rape, sodomy, and arson. WKU Public Radio reported the complete acquittal, and the Kentucky appellate civil opinion likewise distinguishes Soules's guilty plea from Goodrum's acquittal. Goodrum is therefore listed only under the legal role established by the verdict. [WKU Public Radio](https://www.wkyufm.org/regional/2005-03-22/goodrum-found-not-guilty)
Autry's estate separately pursued a wrongful-death action concerning dormitory security and the responsibilities of the university and related entities. That civil litigation did not change the criminal outcomes. [14 News](https://www.14news.com/story/5957530/high-court-hears-case-of-murdered-tri-state-student/)
Because Soules admitted murder and received a life-without-parole sentence, the homicide is classified as solved. The classification does not imply that Goodrum shared responsibility: his acquittal is an equally important part of the record. The summary limits graphic detail while retaining the sexual-violence and fire-related facts necessary to understand the charges and outcome.
