Murder of Kriss Donald

SOLVED2004Pollokshields, Glasgow, Scotland2 SOURCESUPDATED JUL 2026
Illustrative

Kriss Donald was a 15-year-old boy from the Pollokshields area of Glasgow, Scotland. On 15 March 2004, he was abducted from Kenmure Street by a group of men and driven a long distance across Scotland, a round trip of roughly 200 miles toward Dundee and back, while his abductors sought a place to hold him. He was later taken to the Clyde Walkway in the east of Glasgow, where he was stabbed multiple times, sustaining serious internal injuries, and was set on fire. He died at the scene.

Investigators established that Donald had been targeted because he was white. The abduction was linked to a dispute the previous night in which a member of a local group had been assaulted; Donald had no connection to that incident and was selected as he was in his neighbourhood. The killing was subsequently prosecuted as racially aggravated.

The investigation, led by Strathclyde Police, resulted in charges against five men. Daanish Zahid was tried first and, on 18 November 2004, was convicted of murder. His case marked the first conviction for a racially motivated murder in Scotland. A further participant, Zahid Mohammed, pleaded guilty to abduction and related offences, received a five-year sentence, and gave evidence against his co-accused.

Three other suspects, Imran Shahid, his brother Zeeshan Shahid, and Mohammed Faisal Mushtaq, had left the United Kingdom for Pakistan. They were arrested there in July 2005. Although no extradition treaty existed between the two countries, the Pakistani authorities agreed to return them, a process facilitated in part by the intervention of Mohammed Sarwar, then Member of Parliament for Glasgow Central. The three men arrived in Scotland on 5 October 2005 and were charged the following day.

Their trial opened at the High Court in Edinburgh on 2 October 2006. On 8 November 2006, all three were found guilty of the abduction and racially aggravated murder of Kriss Donald, having denied the charges. Each received a life sentence: Imran Shahid, identified as the leader of the group, was ordered to serve a minimum of 25 years; Zeeshan Shahid a minimum of 23 years; and Mushtaq a minimum of 22 years.

In later years, Imran Shahid brought a legal challenge over his prolonged segregation in prison. In October 2015, the UK Supreme Court found that certain periods of his segregation had not complied with prison procedures and breached his rights, while accepting that separating him from the general prison population had been justified for his safety. That finding concerned prison conditions only and did not affect the murder convictions, which stand. The case remains a significant one in Scottish legal history as the country's first to secure convictions for racially motivated murder.
