Murder of Lisa Rene

Lisa Rene was a 16-year-old born in 1978 in Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, who had moved to Texas to study and hoped to become a doctor. On September 24, 1994, she was kidnapped from her apartment in Arlington, Texas, by four men — Orlando Cordia Hall, Bruce Carneil Webster, Demetrius Kenyon Hall, and Steven Christopher Beckley — after her brothers, Neil Rene and Stanfield Vitalis, failed to deliver marijuana they had been given $4,700 to purchase. The men had intended to abduct her brothers but took Rene instead because she was the only one home. A fifth man, Marvin Terrance Holloway, did not directly participate but was present at times and provided financial assistance.
During the abduction, Rene called 911 as the men broke into her apartment; she was dragged to a car despite her attempts to alert the dispatcher. Over the following two days, she was repeatedly raped by multiple members of the group while being transported between Texas and Arkansas, including at a motel where she was tied to a chair. After discussions among the men about the risk of her identifying them, Orlando Hall and Webster decided to kill her. She was taken to a park, struck repeatedly with a shovel, and buried alive; she was unconscious but still alive when buried and died of suffocation.
A warrant was issued three days after her death, and the men were arrested; Beckley confessed and led investigators to her body. Because Rene had been transported across state lines, the case was prosecuted federally under the Federal Kidnapping Act, becoming the first capital case brought under the Federal Death Penalty Act, which had taken effect less than two weeks before the murder.
Orlando Hall was convicted in October 1995 and sentenced to death; he was executed on November 19, 2020, at the federal penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana. Bruce Webster was convicted in June 1996 and initially sentenced to death, but his sentence was later commuted to life without parole after courts found him intellectually disabled. Demetrius Hall, Steven Beckley, and Marvin Holloway pleaded guilty to lesser charges in exchange for testifying against Hall and Webster, receiving sentences of 25 years, 30 years, and 15 years respectively. All three have since been released from prison.
Rene's brothers, Neil Rene and Stanfield Vitalis, were not charged in connection with the kidnapping, though officials considered charges for hindering the investigation. Both later faced separate drug-related convictions. Following Orlando Hall's execution, Rene's sister, Pearl Rene, issued a statement describing decades of pain for the family and noting that the execution would not end their suffering.
