Killing of Mirelle Hernández

Background

Mirelle A. Hernández (July 4, 1975 – December 5, 2021) was a makeup artist who worked on television productions including *Narcos: México*, *Fear the Walking Dead*, *Ingobernable*, and *Tijuana*. She was a resident of Chula Vista, California, and was 45 years old at the time of her death. She was the niece of Juan Manuel Hernández Niebla, a member of the National Public Security Council in Tijuana.

The Carjacking and Killing

On the evening of Sunday, December 5, 2021, Hernández had just finished working on a film set and was outside a restaurant in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, when two men took her bag in a robbery. She attempted to intervene by standing in front of her blue Jeep Cherokee to stop the theft. The perpetrators started her vehicle and ran her over, dragging her toward the nearby Tijuana–Rosarito highway.

Emergency services located Hernández near the highway and transported her to Clinic 20 of the Mexican Social Security Institute. She died shortly after arrival due to traumatic injuries to her head.

Aftermath

Hernández's death drew attention within the film and television industry in Baja California, given her professional work on multiple notable productions and her family connection to a member of the region's public security council.
