In the early morning hours of May 9, 2021, Tristyn Tyne Bailey, a 13-year-old seventh grader and cheerleader at Patriot Oaks Academy in St. Johns, Florida, left her home after being contacted by a 14-year-old schoolmate, Aiden Fucci. A residential security camera recorded the two walking together at 1:45 a.m.; minutes later the same camera recorded a person running in the opposite direction carrying a pair of shoes. Bailey's family reported her missing that morning while preparing to celebrate Mother's Day. Her body was found later that day, around 6:00 p.m., by a resident in a wooded area near a retention pond off Saddlestone Drive. She had been stabbed 114 times, 49 of which were determined to be defensive wounds.

Investigators interviewed Fucci, who initially gave an account of walking Bailey partway home before parting ways. When the timeline did not match, he changed his account, claiming an altercation occurred after Bailey allegedly touched him inappropriately, resulting in her falling and hitting her head. While in the back of a patrol car after questioning, Fucci recorded and posted images and video to Snapchat referencing Bailey's disappearance. A search of Fucci's home turned up bloody clothing and a knife sheath matching a Buck knife recovered from the pond near Bailey's body; the knife's missing tip fragment was later found embedded in Bailey's scalp during the autopsy.

Fucci was initially arrested and booked on a charge of second-degree murder in the early hours of May 10, 2021. Following further investigation, including witness statements that Fucci had previously told friends he intended to kill someone by taking them into the woods and stabbing them, the charge was upgraded to first-degree premeditated murder on May 25, 2021. Fucci's mother, Crystal Smith, was separately arrested on June 4, 2021, and charged with tampering with evidence after home security footage showed her washing blood from Fucci's clothing; she later pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 30 days in jail.

Fucci's case moved through pretrial proceedings for nearly two years, including multiple continuances, a denied motion for change of venue, and documented disciplinary incidents during his detention at Duval County Jail. On February 6, 2023, shortly before jury selection was scheduled to begin, Fucci pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and admitted to killing Bailey, apologizing to her family in court. Because he was a juvenile at the time of the crime, he was ineligible for the death penalty, with a sentencing range of 40 years to life in prison. On March 24, 2023, following a sentencing hearing that included testimony from a clinical psychologist describing the killing as premeditated and non-impulsive, and impact statements from Bailey's family, Judge R. Lee Smith sentenced Fucci, then 16, to life in prison, with eligibility to apply for a case review hearing after 25 years. The judge stated the crime appeared to have no discernible motive.

Bailey's family subsequently established the Tristyn Bailey Memorial Foundation, which supported passage of a Florida law restricting disclosure of crime scene photographs of minor murder victims.
