Murder of Uyinene Mrwetyana
Documents violence · sexual violence — written to inform, not to shock.

Uyinene "Nene" Mrwetyana was a 19-year-old University of Cape Town student studying film and media. Born in East London, Eastern Cape, she grew up in Beacon Bay and attended Hudson Park Primary School and Kingswood College before starting university in Cape Town.
On 24 August 2019, Mrwetyana went to Clareinch Post Office in Claremont, Cape Town, after being told by post office employee Luyanda Botha that her parcel was not ready and she should return in the afternoon, despite the branch's official closing time of 1pm. Botha had reportedly arranged for a colleague, Soraya Abdullah, to leave work early. When Mrwetyana arrived after closing, Botha locked the door, raped her, attempted to strangle her, and ultimately killed her by bludgeoning her with a two-kilogram weight. He returned the next day to move her body, which he then burned in a nearby field.
Mrwetyana had last been seen leaving a minibus taxi near the post office. She was reported missing for nine days, during which the hashtag #BringNeneHome trended on social media amid intense public and media attention. Her body was found on 26 August 2019 in a hole beside a disused railway track in Lingelethu West, Khayelitsha, though it was not identified as hers until several days later.
Botha was arrested and confessed to the crime before the Wynberg Magistrate's Court. On 15 November 2019, he was sentenced to three life terms for the rape and murder, with parole eligibility after 25 years.
Mrwetyana's death triggered widespread national reaction. Memorial services were held at the University of Cape Town and the University of Witwatersrand, and a two-day shutdown occurred at UCT. Large protests took place, including one at the World Economic Forum on Africa in Cape Town on 4 September 2019, attended by President Cyril Ramaphosa, and a larger demonstration outside Parliament in Cape Town the following day that drew several thousand people. The hashtag #AmINext became a rallying point during this period. In response, Ramaphosa announced reforms including harsher penalties for sex offenders and public disclosure of the National Register for Sex Offenders.
The case also drew international attention. In September 2019, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex privately visited the post office where Mrwetyana was killed while touring South Africa with Prince Harry, and protests against gender-based violence were held in Times Square, New York City, in response to her death.
In November 2019, the Uyinene Mrwetyana Foundation was established in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, and a scholarship in her name was later created for female humanities students at UCT, first awarded in July 2021. Her death is widely described as having significantly shaped South African public discourse on gender-based violence and femicide.
