Murders of John and Lois McCullough

John and Lois McCullough, a retired couple from Great Baddow, Essex, were murdered by their youngest daughter, Virginia McCullough, in June 2019. John, a retired business studies lecturer who had worked at Anglia Ruskin University, was 70, and Lois was 71; both were in poor health and relied on their daughter as a caregiver. Virginia had been living rent-free at the property, telling her parents she was studying to become a financially successful artist while actually running up almost £60,000 in debts in their names and forging letters to conceal her deception.

Virginia began planning the murders in March 2019, gathering prescription drugs, and in May 2019 bought a knife and implements to crush medication. On 17 June 2019 she gave both parents a cocktail of crushed prescription drugs; the dose was fatal for John, who did not survive the night, but Lois, who did not drink alcohol, did not receive a lethal amount. After discovering her father dead the next morning, Virginia killed her mother by bludgeoning and stabbing her while she lay in bed. She subsequently sought treatment for a hand injury sustained during the attack and used her father's credit card to buy sleeping bags and other materials to conceal the bodies, building a "makeshift mausoleum" of breezeblocks in her father's study and storing her mother's body in an upstairs wardrobe.

For the next four years, Virginia lived in the house alongside her parents' remains, fabricating stories about their absence, sending cards and messages in their names, claiming their pensions, and spending money — including £21,193 gambled online — with total benefit to her estimated at £149,697. The deception was aided by reduced medical and social contact during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In September 2023, the family's GP raised safeguarding concerns after appointments were repeatedly cancelled and a prescription went uncollected. Essex Police investigated, and after Virginia gave inconsistent explanations, officers executed a search warrant on 15 September 2023, discovering the bodies and arresting her. She confessed during questioning, directing officers to the knife and hammer used in the killings.

Virginia McCullough was charged with two counts of murder and, after a series of pre-trial hearings, pleaded guilty to both counts at Chelmsford Crown Court on 4 July 2024. At sentencing on 11 October 2024, Mr Justice Johnson described her conduct as "a gross violation of the trust that should exist between parents and their children" and sentenced her to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 36 years, ruling out a whole life order due to her early admissions and guilty pleas. The court heard that her mental health conditions, including autism and paranoia, did not substantially reduce her culpability, and that the killings were committed "for gain" following prolonged economic abuse of her parents. Her sentence was later reviewed under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme but was not referred to the Court of Appeal.
