San Francisco UPS shooting

Illustrative

On the morning of June 14, 2017, at approximately 8:55 a.m., a shooting occurred during a staff meeting at a United Parcel Service (UPS) packaging and sorting facility at 320 San Bruno Avenue in the Potrero Hill neighborhood of San Francisco, California. Jimmy Chanh Lam, a 38-year-old UPS driver and 18-year employee, entered the building, setting off a metal detector at the employee entrance but was allowed inside. During the meeting, Lam singled out specific coworkers, first shooting Benson Louie, 50, in the head without warning. As other employees fled, Lam shot Wayne Chan, 56, in the back. He then shot and injured two other employees, Alvin Xiao Chen and Edgar Perez, before pursuing Mike Lefiti, 46, out of the building and fatally shooting him at the corner of 17th and San Bruno streets.

Witnesses reported that employees fled the building along 16th and 17th streets, with a group of approximately fifteen flagging down a passing municipal bus to escape; others took shelter on the facility's roof. Police were called at 8:56 a.m. and, upon arrival, were informed an active shooter was inside. After a brief search, officers located Lam near the bodies of Louie and Chan, holding a weapon to his own head. When ordered to drop the weapon, Lam shot and killed himself. San Francisco Police Department Assistant Chief Toney Chaplin confirmed that responding officers did not fire any shots.

Lam, born in Thailand and raised in the United States from infancy, had no history of violent crime but had two prior DUI-related arrests, in 2010 and 2013, and a license suspension in 2014. Coworkers described him as a "loner" who had recently appeared troubled. He had filed an overtime grievance with UPS management in the months before the shooting. Police recovered two firearms: a semi-automatic MAC-10 pistol, from which Lam fired 20 rounds and which had been reported stolen in Utah, and a Smith & Wesson Model 459 pistol, reported stolen in Napa, California, which was not fired. Investigators did not determine how the weapons came into Lam's possession.

The three men killed—Wayne Chan, Mike Lefiti, and Benson Louie—were longtime UPS employees with 28, 17, and 17 years of service respectively. Five additional injuries were reported, some sustained while employees fled the scene. A memorial service was held on July 9, 2017, at San Francisco City Hall, attended by family, coworkers, Mayor Ed Lee, and Representative Nancy Pelosi. In September 2017, a lawsuit was filed on behalf of victims and their families alleging the shooting was preventable despite the presence of metal detectors and security guards.
