Stand-off in Be'eri and Ofakim

On October 7, 2023, during the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah, Hamas and allied Palestinian militant groups launched coordinated armed incursions from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel as part of what they called Operation Al-Aqsa Flood. The assault combined rocket barrages with cross-border infiltration by fighters using trucks, motorcycles, bulldozers, speedboats, and powered paragliders, breaching the Gaza–Israel barrier at numerous points and striking multiple Israeli communities and military installations.
Among the locations affected were the kibbutz of Be'eri and the town of Ofakim, both of which became sites of prolonged hostage stand-offs between militants and Israeli forces. In Be'eri, approximately 70 Hamas militants carried out an attack that killed at least 130 residents, roughly ten percent of the community, including women, children, and infants. Homes were burned, and hostages were taken, leading to an 18-hour stand-off between the militants and the Israel Defense Forces before up to 50 hostages held there were freed. Survivors reported that some deaths at Be'eri resulted from friendly fire, including an incident in which an Israeli tank fired on a house believed to hold around 40 Hamas fighters and 14 hostages, killing all but one of the hostages inside.
In Ofakim, described as the furthest point reached by the initial wave of attacks, 47 people were killed. The town, home to a large working-class population of North African Jewish descent, was one of the first locations where a hostage situation was reported. Militants reportedly targeted older residential areas lacking individual bomb shelters, and locals said invaders shot at people attempting to reach communal shelters. Local police, led by Chief Superintendent Jayar Davidov, engaged militants in a shootout; Davidov and three of his officers were killed. The IDF later rescued two Israeli hostages in the nearby suburb of Urim.
These events occurred within the broader context of the October 7 attacks, which killed approximately 1,195–1,219 people across Israel, including hundreds of civilians and security personnel, and resulted in roughly 250 people being taken hostage into Gaza. The attacks are widely described as the deadliest single day in Israeli history and prompted Israel to launch a large-scale military operation in Gaza, beginning the Gaza war.
Investigations following the attacks, including by Israel's Shin Bet security agency, found intelligence and operational failures that contributed to the scale of the incursions, including delayed warnings and underestimation of Hamas's capabilities. Casualty figures for the broader October 7 attacks were revised multiple times in the months following the event as remains were identified and previously missing individuals were accounted for.
