Texas Killing Fields

ONGOING2011Calder Road, League City, Texas3 SOURCESUPDATED JUL 2026
Illustrative

The Texas Killing Fields refers to a stretch of the Interstate 45 corridor southeast of Houston where, since the early 1970s, the remains of at least 34 people — most of them girls and young women between the ages of 12 and 25 — have been recovered. The name also refers more specifically to a 25-acre field in League City, Texas, where four women's bodies were found between 1983 and 1991. A joint task force of League City police and the FBI, known as Operation HALT, was formed to investigate the pattern, but despite decades of work, most of the killings remain unsolved.

The earliest documented case dates to June 17, 1971, when 13-year-old Colette Wilson disappeared from a bus stop in Alvin, Texas; her remains were found five months later near Addicks Reservoir. Over the next several years, more than a dozen additional girls and young women vanished or were found dead across Galveston, Harris, and Brazoria counties. One case was resolved through a disputed process: Michael Lloyd Self, a convicted sex offender, confessed after a lengthy 1972 interrogation to killing 13-year-old Sharon Shaw and was convicted in 1974. He later retracted the confession, alleging he had been tortured by interrogators, and in 1976 the League City police chief and a deputy were themselves convicted of torture and other misconduct against detainees. Self died in custody in 2000; afterward, several officials said they believed he had been wrongfully convicted.

The 25-acre Calder Road field in League City yielded four bodies: Heidi Villarreal-Fye, found in 1984; Laura Miller, found in 1986 about 60 feet away; Audrey Lee Cook, whose remains were found the same day as Miller's; and Donna Prudhomme, found in 1991. Cook and Prudhomme were not identified until 2019, when investigators used genetic genealogy. A related Galveston-area case, the 1985 death of Ellen Beason, was tied to acquaintance Clyde Hedrick, who was convicted of abusing her corpse in 1996 and, after further investigation, convicted of manslaughter following a 2014 murder charge; he was released from prison in 2021. A 2022 documentary named Hedrick as a suspect in additional deaths, and he was found civilly liable — but not criminally charged — in a wrongful-death lawsuit over Miller's death. He died by suicide in March 2026; ten days later, James Elmore was charged with manslaughter in Miller's death and with tampering with evidence connected to the remains of Miller and Cook.

Several other cases were eventually resolved through DNA evidence. John Robert King and Gerald Peter Zwarst were convicted in 1998 of the 1986 killing of Shelley Sikes, whose body was never recovered. Kevin Edison Smith was convicted in 2012 of the 1996 killing of 13-year-old Krystal Jean Baker after a DNA match; the case led Texas to pass a law expanding DNA collection from felony arrestees. William Lewis Reece, already convicted in a separate Oklahoma murder, confessed to and was convicted in 2022 of the murders of Laura Smither, Kelli Ann Cox, and Jessica Lee Cain after directing investigators to the latter two victims' remains in 2016. A 1981 double homicide in Harris County went unidentified for four decades until forensic genealogists named the victims as Tina Gail Clouse and Harold Dean Clouse Jr. in 2021; their daughter was located alive in Oklahoma the following year. Most other cases along the corridor, including several disappearances with no remains recovered, remain open.
