Thousand Oaks shooting

On the night of November 7, 2018, a gunman entered the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, California, during a "College Country Night" event popular with students from nearby universities and colleges. At 11:18 p.m., the gunman, later identified by the Ventura County Sheriff as 28-year-old Ian David Long, opened fire on the roughly 260 patrons and employees inside, killing the cashier first before shooting at others in the crowd. He fired approximately 61 rounds from a legally purchased .45-caliber Glock 21 pistol equipped with a tactical light and laser sight, using seven high-capacity magazines, and also threw smoke bombs inside the bar. Patrons broke windows to escape, while others hid in an employee bathroom or attic.
California Highway Patrol officers nearby were alerted by fleeing patrons and arrived within minutes, joined shortly after by Ventura County Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus. Helus and one CHP officer entered the bar at 11:25 p.m. and came under fire from Long, who had been tracking their movements via security-camera monitors. Helus was shot multiple times, including once by a round from the CHP officer's rifle that struck him after passing through Long's line of fire; that round proved fatal. Confusion among responding units delayed the removal of Helus from the scene by roughly twenty minutes. Long ceased firing after this exchange, threw two fireworks from the office where he had taken shelter, and died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound at 11:38 p.m.
Eleven civilians were killed in addition to the gunman: seven were college students, one was a recent graduate, and the others included a 48-year-old bouncer, a 33-year-old Marine Corps veteran, and a 27-year-old Navy veteran who had survived the 2017 Las Vegas shooting. Sgt. Helus, 54, also died. According to the Ventura County chief coroner, all fatal victims suffered non-survivable wounds. One additional person suffered a gunshot injury, and fifteen others were injured by incidental causes such as broken glass or trampling.
A 434-page joint report by the Ventura County Sheriff's Office and FBI, released in June 2021, concluded Long held disdain for civilians unaffiliated with the military and had likely suffered from PTSD, though investigators stopped short of confirming hatred of college students as a definitive motive. Long, a Marine Corps veteran who deployed to Afghanistan from 2010 to 2011, had prior contact with law enforcement, including a 2015 bar-fight incident, and had been visited by police and a mental health crisis team in 2017 without being detained.
In the shooting's aftermath, the Woolsey Fire forced evacuations in the area within 24 hours. Public memorials, a mental-health task force, and community fundraising exceeding $3.6 million followed, along with the eventual release of investigative recordings after litigation by local media in 2022.
