President William McKinley was shot while greeting the public at the Temple of Music in Buffalo on September 6, 1901. Leon Czolgosz fired twice: one bullet grazed the president, and another wounded him. Gangrene later developed, and the president died 8 days after the shooting. A jury convicted Leon Czolgosz of first-degree murder; he was executed on October 29, 1901.
