On the night before Brazil's Black Consciousness Day, João Alberto Silveira Freitas was beaten and pinned to the ground by two supermarket security guards. Witnesses said the 40-year-old asked to be allowed to breathe. He died of asphyxiation in the parking lot. His killing set off anti-racism protests in cities across Brazil.
