Police responded to a store report about a counterfeit $20 bill on May 25, 2020. During the arrest, George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, became unresponsive and was later pronounced dead. Medical reviews ruled his death a homicide. A jury convicted Derek Chauvin of murder; he later pleaded guilty to federal civil-rights charges. Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng pleaded guilty to state manslaughter charges; a judge separately convicted Tou Thao. Lane, Kueng, and Thao were also convicted federally of civil-rights violations.
