On February 2, 2013, author Chris Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield were killed at a Texas shooting range by Eddie Ray Routh, a Marine veteran they were trying to help. Routh was convicted of capital murder in 2015 and sentenced to life without parole.

A mother asked Chris Kyle to help her son. Kyle said yes. Her son, Eddie Ray Routh, was a Marine veteran with PTSD. The American Sniper author took him to a Texas shooting range. Kyle's friend Chad Littlefield came along. Routh shot them both. Neither man drew his own gun. Routh's defense claimed insanity. In 2015, a jury took under 3 hours to convict him.
