An unidentified killer known as Zodiac attacked seven people in Northern California between December 1968 and October 1969, and five of them died. He taunted police and newspapers with letters and four ciphers. Two of the ciphers have never been cracked, and nobody has ever been charged.

In October 1969, a San Francisco cab driver was shot dead. Paul Lee Stine. The fifth to die. Before him, Betty Lou Jensen and David Faraday on Lake Herman Road. Darlene Ferrin in Vallejo. Cecelia Shepard at Lake Berryessa. Two more survived. In letters to newspapers, the killer called himself Zodiac. Four ciphers. Two were cracked, one in 2020. Two remain unsolved.
