1992 Dayton Christmas murders
Documents violence · crimes against children — written to inform, not to shock.

Between December 24 and December 26, 1992, a gang calling itself the "Downtown Posse" committed a series of six murders and two non-fatal shootings across Dayton, Ohio. The group consisted of 19-year-old ringleader Marvallous Matthew Keene, his 16-year-old girlfriend Laura Jeanne Taylor, 20-year-old Heather Nicole Matthews, and Matthews's 17-year-old boyfriend DeMarcus Maurice Smith.
The killings began on December 24, 1992, when Keene, Taylor and Matthews robbed and fatally shot 34-year-old Joseph Wilkerson, an acquaintance of Taylor's, after luring him with the pretense of sex. The same day, Keene and Smith shot and killed 18-year-old Danita Gullette, a high school senior and mother of a two-year-old, after robbing her of her shoes and jacket. That night, Smith shot Matthews's ex-boyfriend, Jeffrey Wright, four times in the legs; Wright survived. On December 25, Taylor shot and killed her ex-boyfriend, 19-year-old Richmond Maddox, while riding in his car. On the morning of December 26, during an armed robbery of a family-owned grocery store, Keene shot and killed 38-year-old Sarah Abraham, who died four days later, while Smith wounded customer Jones Pettus; a third employee was unharmed. Fearing exposure, the gang later killed two friends, 16-year-old Wendy Cottrill and 18-year-old Marvin Washington, at a gravel pit; their bodies were not found for five days.
Police arrested all four gang members on December 26, 1992, roughly 72 hours after the first murder. Keene and Matthews, as adults, were charged with aggravated murder and robbery; Taylor and Smith, both juveniles, were later approved for trial as adults. Keene waived a jury and was tried before a three-judge panel, which convicted him on all 20 counts on October 12, 1993. He was sentenced to death for five murders on December 10, 1993. Matthews accepted a plea deal removing the death penalty and was sentenced to consecutive life terms. Taylor and Smith were separately tried in 1994 and also received life sentences.
Keene's appeals, including claims of racial bias in the decision to seek the death penalty against him but not Matthews, were rejected by the Ohio Supreme Court and the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. Ohio's governor declined clemency, and Keene was executed by lethal injection on July 21, 2009, becoming the 1,000th person executed by lethal injection in the United States since 1982. Matthews, Taylor and Smith remain incarcerated, with parole eligibility dates far in the future.
