Illustrative

On the night of 29 May 2010 into the early hours of 30 May 2010, a group of four Malaysians from Sarawak — Micheal Anak Garing, Tony Anak Imba, Hairee Anak Landak, and Donny Anak Meluda — committed a series of robberies in and around the Kallang area of Singapore. Over roughly eight hours, they attacked four men: construction worker Sandeep Singh, national serviceman Ang Jun Heng, pipe fitter Egan Karrupaiah, and construction worker Shanmuganathan Dillidurai. The first three victims survived with severe injuries, including fractured skulls and severed fingers or hands, after being struck with a brick and slashed with a parang wielded by Micheal, with Tony and others also participating in the beatings and robbery of phones and wallets. Shanmuganathan, the fourth victim, was fatally attacked; an autopsy found twenty injuries, four of which caused his death, including a fractured skull, a severed hand, and a slashed jugular vein.

Police investigations led to the arrest of Micheal, Tony, and Hairee, while Donny Meluda fled to Malaysia and remained a fugitive for nearly seven years. Four other men who had participated in an earlier, unrelated robbery of a construction worker were also arrested and later sentenced separately for gang robbery. Hairee's murder charge was reduced to armed robbery with hurt after he pleaded guilty; in January 2013 he was sentenced to 33 years' imprisonment and 24 strokes of the cane.

Micheal and Tony were tried for murder before Justice Choo Han Teck in the High Court, with the trial beginning in October 2013. Both men blamed each other for wielding the parang against Shanmuganathan. On 20 January 2014, Justice Choo convicted both of murder, finding that Micheal alone used the parang while Tony restrained the victim. On 20 April 2015, Micheal was sentenced to death and Tony to life imprisonment with 24 strokes of the cane. Both parties appealed, and on 27 February 2017 the Court of Appeal dismissed both the defense's and prosecution's appeals, upholding the original sentences.

Donny Meluda, who had converted to Islam and changed his name to Abdul Rahman Abdullah, was arrested in Malaysia in January 2017 and extradited to Singapore. His murder charge was later reduced to armed robbery with hurt, to which he pleaded guilty; on 19 November 2018 he was sentenced to 33 years' imprisonment and 24 strokes of the cane, concluding all court proceedings in the case.

Micheal Garing's appeal having failed, he was hanged at Changi Prison on 22 March 2019 after his clemency petition was rejected by President Halimah Yacob. His execution drew international attention, including appeals for clemency from Malaysian officials, a Malaysian human rights lawyer, and organizations including Amnesty International, the European Union, and the Embassy of Switzerland in Singapore. Surviving victims Ang Jun Heng and Egan Karrupaiah later spoke publicly about their recoveries; Ang went on to pursue an athletic and academic career in the United States, while Egan returned to India in 2014 after receiving donations from the Singaporean public.
