Murder of Jyoti Singh (2012 Delhi Gang Rape and Murder)
Documents violence · sexual violence · torture — written to inform, not to shock.

On the night of 16 December 2012, Jyoti Singh, a 22-year-old physiotherapy intern, and her male friend Awindra Pratap Pandey boarded a private charter bus in the Munirka area of Delhi after watching a film. The bus, which was not licensed to carry public passengers, was occupied by six men, including the driver, Ram Singh. When Pandey objected to the bus deviating from its route, a group of men beat him unconscious with an iron rod and dragged Singh to the rear of the bus, where she was beaten and gang raped while the vehicle continued moving. Medical reports later described severe injuries to her abdomen, intestines and genitals, consistent with penetration by a blunt object. Both victims were thrown from the moving bus and found by a passerby, who alerted police.
Singh was treated at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, undergoing multiple surgeries, before being transferred, amid public pressure, to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on 27 December 2012. She suffered a cardiac arrest during the flight and never regained consciousness, dying on 29 December 2012. Indian law prohibits publishing the identity of rape victims, so she was widely referred to by the pseudonym "Nirbhaya" (fearless one), though her family later stated they wished her real name to be known.
Police arrested six suspects: Ram Singh (the driver), his brother Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta, Akshay Thakur, and a 17-year-old identified as Mohammed Afroz. Ram Singh died in police custody on 11 March 2013, in circumstances officials described as a likely suicide, though his family and defense lawyers disputed this account. The remaining four adult defendants were tried in a fast-track court; on 10 September 2013 they were found guilty of rape and murder, and on 13 September 2013 they were sentenced to death. The Delhi High Court upheld these convictions and sentences on 13 March 2014. The Supreme Court of India rejected the convicts' appeal on 5 May 2017, and subsequent review and curative petitions were also dismissed, with the final rejection of appeals occurring on 18 December 2019. Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta, and Akshay Thakur were executed by hanging at Tihar Jail on 20 March 2020. The juvenile defendant, Mohammed Afroz, was tried separately under the Juvenile Justice Act and, on 31 August 2013, was convicted of rape and murder and given the maximum juvenile sentence of three years in a reform facility; he was released in December 2015.
The case prompted large-scale public protests across India, including clashes with police at India Gate and Raisina Hill in New Delhi, and drew international condemnation. In response, a judicial committee was formed to review laws on sexual violence, leading to the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013, which introduced stricter penalties for sexual offenses and established additional fast-track courts. Jyoti Singh was posthumously awarded a 2013 International Women of Courage Award by the US State Department. Despite these legal reforms, the victim's father stated in December 2014 that he felt promises of systemic change had gone largely unmet.
