Tamil film journalist C. N. Lakshmikanthan was fatally stabbed in Madras in November 1944. Film stars M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar and N. S. Krishnan were convicted of his murder, but the Privy Council later ordered a retrial that acquitted them. The killing remains unsolved.

Former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was killed by a suicide bomber tied to the LTTE at a campaign rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, on 21 May 1991, along with 14 other people. Twenty-six people were convicted at trial; the Supreme Court later reduced death sentences to four, and in 2022 the Supreme Court ordered the release of the last six convicts still imprisoned.

Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was shot dead by two of her own bodyguards at her New Delhi residence on 31 October 1984, months after she ordered a military operation against Sikh militants at the Golden Temple. Her assassination triggered widespread anti-Sikh violence across India.

Thirteen-year-old Aarushi Talwar and 45-year-old domestic worker Hemraj Banjade were found killed at the Talwar family's Noida apartment in May 2008. Aarushi's parents were later convicted and then acquitted on appeal; the case remains legally unsolved.

On 4 September 1985, Delhi Metropolitan Council member and Congress leader Arjun Dass was shot dead along with his bodyguard by three Sikh assailants in Delhi, in what was described as revenge for his alleged role in leading mobs during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Model Jessica Lal was shot dead at a crowded Delhi party in 1999; after a controversial 2006 acquittal sparked national outrage, an appeals court convicted Manu Sharma of her murder and he was sentenced to life imprisonment, a sentence upheld by the Supreme Court in 2010.

A bomb exploded inside the Makkah Masjid in Hyderabad, India, on 18 May 2007 during Friday prayers, killing 16 people, five of them shot by police during subsequent rioting. In 2018 an NIA court acquitted all 11 accused, including Hindu preacher Swami Aseemanand, citing lack of evidence.
