Martha Moxley, 15, was found bludgeoned and stabbed with a golf club in her family's Greenwich, Connecticut backyard on October 31, 1975. Michael Skakel was convicted of her murder in 2002, but after multiple appeals his conviction was overturned in 2018, and in 2020 prosecutors announced they would not retry him.

Richard Oland, a 69-year-old Saint John businessman, was bludgeoned to death in his office in July 2011; his son Dennis Oland was convicted of the killing in 2015, had that conviction overturned on appeal in 2016, and was found not guilty at retrial in 2019.

Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old unarmed Black massage therapist, died in Aurora, Colorado, after police forcibly restrained him and paramedics injected him with an overdose of ketamine during a August 2019 stop; one officer was convicted, two were acquitted, and the paramedics' negligent-homicide convictions were later overturned on appeal with a new trial pending.

Thirteen-year-old Aarushi Talwar and 45-year-old domestic worker Hemraj Banjade were found killed at the Talwar family's Noida apartment in May 2008. Aarushi's parents were later convicted and then acquitted on appeal; the case remains legally unsolved.

On June 7, 2021, Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were found shot to death at their family's hunting estate in Islandton, South Carolina. Maggie's husband and Paul's father, attorney Alex Murdaugh, was convicted of both murders in March 2023 and sentenced to two consecutive life terms, but the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned the convictions in May 2026 after finding a court clerk had tampered with the jury; prosecutors have said they plan to retry the case.

Pravin Varughese, a 19-year-old Southern Illinois University student, died in the woods near Carbondale, Illinois, in February 2014 after a confrontation with Gaege Bethune, whose murder conviction was later vacated and the charges dismissed.

On November 8, 2010, Bich Pan was fatally shot and her husband Hann Pan was blinded during a staged home-invasion in Markham, Ontario. Investigators determined the couple's daughter, Jennifer Pan, had arranged the attack with hired men after her parents restricted her personal life and discovered years of deception about her education.

Chiropractor Mary Yoder died in July 2015 after being poisoned with colchicine; her receptionist Kaitlyn Conley was convicted of manslaughter in 2018, but the conviction was overturned on appeal in 2025 and a third trial is now being pursued.

Brenda Powell was killed in her Akron home in 2020; her daughter's murder conviction was reversed on appeal, and further state review remains pending.

Michelle O'Keefe, an 18-year-old college student and aspiring actress, was shot and killed in a Palmdale, California parking lot in 2000. A man later convicted of the murder, Raymond Lee Jennings, was exonerated in 2016 after evidence pointed to a gang-related killing involving other people present at the scene.
