Nine experienced Soviet ski hikers led by Igor Dyatlov died in the northern Ural Mountains on 1 or 2 February 1959 after cutting their way out of their tent and fleeing into a snowstorm inadequately dressed for the cold; Russian authorities reopened the case in 2019 and announced in 2020 that an avalanche was the most likely cause, though the deaths remain widely described as unexplained and some researchers dispute that conclusion.

Two Arkansas teenagers, Don Henry, 16, and Kevin Ives, 17, were found dead on railroad tracks in Alexander, Arkansas, on August 23, 1987, after being struck by a freight train. Initially ruled an accident, a grand jury later declared the deaths "probable homicides," and the case remains unsolved amid allegations of witness deaths and official misconduct.

Don Lewis, a Tampa, Florida, businessman and co-founder of an exotic-animal sanctuary, disappeared on August 18, 1997, at age 59, after leaving home on an early-morning delivery; his van was found two days later at an airport 40 miles away with the keys inside. He was declared legally dead in 2002. No one has been arrested or charged, and investigators have said they have no evidence a crime occurred; the case drew renewed public attention after the 2020 documentary series Tiger King.

Elsie Frost, a 14-year-old schoolgirl, was fatally stabbed in a railway underpass near Wakefield in 1965; despite a massive manhunt no one was ever convicted, and a 2019 inquest posthumously named Peter Pickering as her killer.
