Disappearance
On 28 July 1986, Susannah Jane "Suzy" Lamplugh, a 25-year-old estate agent working for Sturgis at 654 Fulham Road, West London, left her office to show a house at 37 Shorrolds Road, Fulham, to a client recorded in her diary only as "Mr Kipper." Multiple witnesses saw her outside the property between around 12:45 pm and 1:00 pm in the company of an unidentified man, later described from identikit images as a white male aged 25–30 with dark, swept-back hair, immaculately dressed, of "public schoolboy" appearance, and possibly carrying a champagne bottle. Witnesses later reported seeing the pair get into a car, and separate sightings that afternoon described a woman matching Lamplugh's description apparently struggling with a man inside a dark, left-hand-drive BMW. Her white Ford Fiesta was later found abandoned near Stevenage Road, roughly a mile away, parked in a manner suggesting someone unfamiliar with her preferred seating position had driven it. Colleagues reported her missing to police that evening. No trace of Lamplugh has ever been found, and she was declared legally dead, presumed murdered, on 27 July 1993.
Initial investigation and reopening
The original 1986 missing-person inquiry used a manual card-index system and did not initially treat known local criminals as suspects. A year later, detectives noted that the "Mr Kipper" identikit resembled John Cannan, a convicted rapist who had been released from prison on day release just days before Lamplugh vanished and who was known to frequent wine bars in the area. In October 1987, Cannan abducted and murdered 29-year-old Shirley Banks in Bristol, for which he received a life sentence along with convictions for rape and attempted abduction. Investigators noted a false number plate on Banks's recovered car reading "SLP 386S," which some detectives believed could reference Lamplugh's initials and the year 1986. During subsequent interviews, Cannan made ambiguous statements referring to a "Bristol businessman" responsible for the murders of Banks, Lamplugh, and "another girl," later widely interpreted by investigators as a veiled reference to himself.
A formal cold-case reinvestigation launched in the early 2000s computerised the original files, uncovered further circumstantial links to Cannan (including his ownership of a matching BMW and access to a red Ford Sierra), and obtained forensic evidence indicating Lamplugh had been in a car linked to Cannan. Cannan was arrested and interviewed in December 2000 and again in September 2001 but provided no alibi and no information eliminating him from the inquiry. In November 2002, police publicly named Cannan as their prime suspect, but the Crown Prosecution Service determined after months of review that the evidence was insufficient to charge him.
Other suspects eliminated; later searches
Speculation that convicted kidnapper-murderer Michael Sams, and later that Ipswich murderer Steve Wright, might have been responsible for Lamplugh's disappearance was investigated and discounted by police on evidentiary grounds. Numerous searches for Lamplugh's remains — including at Norton Barracks, a brickworks, sites in Somerset and Pershore, and a house in Sutton Coldfield linked to Cannan's mother — have not located her body. Cannan died in Full Sutton Prison on 6 November 2024, having never disclosed the location of Lamplugh's remains.
Legacy
Lamplugh's parents, Paul and Diana Lamplugh, founded the Suzy Lamplugh Trust in December 1986 to promote personal safety awareness and support families of missing people; the Trust also runs the UK's National Stalking Helpline.
