Martha Moxley, 15, was found bludgeoned and stabbed with a golf club in her family's Greenwich, Connecticut backyard on October 31, 1975. Michael Skakel was convicted of her murder in 2002, but after multiple appeals his conviction was overturned in 2018, and in 2020 prosecutors announced they would not retry him.

Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old unarmed Black massage therapist, died in Aurora, Colorado, after police forcibly restrained him and paramedics injected him with an overdose of ketamine during a August 2019 stop; one officer was convicted, two were acquitted, and the paramedics' negligent-homicide convictions were later overturned on appeal with a new trial pending.

On June 7, 2021, Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were found shot to death at their family's hunting estate in Islandton, South Carolina. Maggie's husband and Paul's father, attorney Alex Murdaugh, was convicted of both murders in March 2023 and sentenced to two consecutive life terms, but the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned the convictions in May 2026 after finding a court clerk had tampered with the jury; prosecutors have said they plan to retry the case.

Pravin Varughese, a 19-year-old Southern Illinois University student, died in the woods near Carbondale, Illinois, in February 2014 after a confrontation with Gaege Bethune, whose murder conviction was later vacated and the charges dismissed.

Chiropractor Mary Yoder died in July 2015 after being poisoned with colchicine; her receptionist Kaitlyn Conley was convicted of manslaughter in 2018, but the conviction was overturned on appeal in 2025 and a third trial is now being pursued.

Michelle O'Keefe, an 18-year-old college student and aspiring actress, was shot and killed in a Palmdale, California parking lot in 2000. A man later convicted of the murder, Raymond Lee Jennings, was exonerated in 2016 after evidence pointed to a gang-related killing involving other people present at the scene.
VA Hospital, Ann Arbor, Michigan · 1975
In 1975, ten patients at a VA hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, suffered respiratory failure after unauthorized administration of the paralyzing drug Pavulon in their IVs. Nurses Filipina Narciso and Leonora Perez were charged with murder, convicted only of poisoning and conspiracy, and the case was ultimately dropped after a retrial was ordered.

Robert Durst, a New York real estate heir, was linked to three deaths over four decades: the 1982 disappearance of his first wife, Kathleen McCormack; the 2000 killing of his friend Susan Berman; and the 2001 killing of neighbor Morris Black. He was convicted of Berman's murder in 2021 and acquitted in the Black case in 2003, but died in January 2022 — before a separate McCormack murder charge reached trial — which automatically vacated the Berman conviction.

Megan Meier, a 13-year-old from O'Fallon, Missouri, died by suicide in October 2006 after being targeted through a fake MySpace persona created by a neighbor, Lori Drew. A federal jury later convicted Drew under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, but the conviction was vacated by a judge and not appealed.
