2014 Las Vegas Shootings

On June 8, 2014, a married couple, Jerad Miller and Amanda Miller, carried out a shooting spree in northeastern Las Vegas, Nevada, that left five people dead, including the two perpetrators. The attack began around 11:22 a.m. at a CiCi's Pizza restaurant, where Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers Igor Soldo, 31, and Alyn Beck, 41, were eating lunch. Jerad Miller shot Soldo in the head and Beck in the throat, head, and chest; both Millers then continued firing at the officers after they had fallen. The couple covered Beck's body with a Gadsden flag and a swastika and left a note reading "This is the beginning of the revolution." They also stole the officers' handguns and ammunition.

The Millers then fled to a nearby Walmart, where Jerad fired a shot into the ceiling and ordered shoppers to leave. A customer, Joseph Robert Wilcox, 31, drew a concealed firearm to confront Jerad but was shot and killed by Amanda Miller, who he had not realized was armed. Responding Las Vegas police officers—identified as Brett Brosnahan, Tim Gross, Zachery Beal, John Bethard, David Corbin, and Sergeant Kurt McKenzie, aided by officers monitoring store CCTV—engaged the Millers in a gunfight inside the store. Officer Zachery Beal fatally shot Jerad Miller in the chest. Amanda Miller, who had been wounded during the exchange, shot herself in the head and later died at University Medical Center of Southern Nevada. Investigators recovered multiple firearms, ammunition, knives, and survival gear from the couple's backpacks, along with papers at their apartment outlining plans to seize a courthouse and execute public officials.

Jerad Miller had a prior criminal record in Washington and Indiana and had made public threats and anti-government statements, including online posts referencing violence and "revolution." Amanda Miller had no prior criminal record. Both had been present for several days at the April 2014 Bundy standoff in Nevada but were reportedly told to leave by militia members due to their radical views and Jerad's status as a felon in possession of a firearm. Acquaintances said the couple idolized the perpetrators of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting and had discussed carrying out a similar attack. Police officials stated that the swastika placed at the restaurant crime scene was intended to associate police with Nazism rather than indicating white-supremacist motivation, though a police official described their ideology as aligned with militia and white-supremacist views.

Public officials, including Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, Senator Harry Reid, Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman, and Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, issued statements condemning the killings. Las Vegas Sheriff Doug Gillespie described Wilcox as a hero for attempting to intervene. The case drew public debate about concealed-carry effectiveness and about anti-government rhetoric on social media following praise for the officers' deaths by some online commenters.
