Murder of Jeff German

Jeff German was a veteran investigative reporter in Las Vegas who had covered courts, politics, and organized crime for more than three decades. In 2022, while working for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, he published articles about Clark County Public Administrator Robert Telles and allegations concerning management of that office. Telles subsequently lost his primary election for another term. On September 2, 2022, German was attacked outside his Las Vegas home and died from multiple sharp-force injuries. Authorities classified the death as a homicide. [ABC News Australia](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-08-29/robert-telles-sentenced-for-murdering-journalist-las-vegas/104284872)
Investigators focused on video and physical evidence. Reporting from the 2024 trial described surveillance images of a person in conspicuous clothing approaching German's home and entering a side yard, as well as a maroon sport-utility vehicle traveling between the area of Telles's home and German's neighborhood. Police arrested Telles days after the killing. At trial, prosecutors also presented evidence that Telles's DNA was found beneath German's fingernails. Telles testified in his own defense and denied killing German, maintaining that he had been framed. After an 11-day trial and three days of deliberation, the jury found Telles guilty of first-degree murder on August 28, 2024. The jury initially fixed the punishment at life in prison with the possibility of parole after 20 years. The verdict legally resolved the question of criminal responsibility, even though Telles continued to assert his innocence. German's reporting and the handling of unpublished material on his devices also generated a separate legal dispute over protecting confidential journalistic sources during the homicide investigation. At the formal sentencing in October 2024, the judge added enhancements based on factors including use of a deadly weapon, lying in wait, and German's age. CBS News reported that those additions raised the minimum time Telles must serve to 28 years. The sentence remained life with the possibility of parole, subject to that enhanced minimum. Telles filed a direct appeal in the Nevada Supreme Court and is asking for a new trial. In September 2025, KTNV reported that his opening brief alleged errors involving jury selection, discovery, and cross-examination. Those are appellate claims, not rulings, and the court had not displaced the conviction as of the July 12, 2026 audit. The standing conviction therefore continues to support solved status, but the judgment should not be described as final or appellate review as exhausted.
