On 21 January 2014, a bus carrying pilgrims returning from Iran was attacked with a bomb as it traveled through Mastung District on the Quetta-Taftan Highway in Pakistan. The bus came under attack at approximately 6:15 pm after crossing the Pakistan-Iran border at Taftan. The bombing initially left 22 pilgrims dead and 32 wounded, eight of whom were women. Two of the injured later died from the severity of their injuries, raising the death toll to 24.
Asadur Rehman Gilani, identified as a homeland security secretary, estimated that 80 to 100 kilograms of explosives were used in the attack, which destroyed the bus along with three other vehicles. The attack was condemned by then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and President Mamnoon Hussain, as well as by political and religious organizations including the Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen and the Hazara Democratic Party. Abdul Malik Baloch reported on the attack. Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a militant group, claimed responsibility for the bombing.
In the aftermath, reports on the same day indicated that the death toll had climbed to 29. The bodies of victims were laid to rest the following day at the Bahisht-e-Zainab and Bahisht-e-Zahra graveyards, located in Hazara Town and Quetta respectively. On 23 January, relatives of the victims began a sit-in protest that continued until Thursday night. By 24 January 2014, Pakistani law enforcement had detained 25 individuals in connection with the case and had restricted further travel in the region.
