2015 Sadr City Market Truck Bombing

On the morning of 13 August 2015, shortly after 06:00 local time, a refrigeration truck packed with explosives was detonated in Sadr City, a predominantly Shi'ite neighborhood of Baghdad, Iraq. The blast struck one of the city's largest wholesale food markets, an area typically crowded with vendors and shoppers at that hour. At least 76 people were confirmed killed as of the day of the attack, with more than 212 others injured. The scale of casualties made it one of the deadliest single bombings in Baghdad that year.
The Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack. In its claim, the group stated that "God has enabled the soldiers of the Islamic State to detonate a parked, booby-trapped truck amid a gathering of apostates in one of their most important Shiite majority strongholds, in Sadr City." IS asserted that the intended target was members of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces, a coalition of mostly Shi'ite militias allied with the Iraqi government. However, CNN reported that Gyorgy Busztin, the top United Nations official in Iraq at the time, described the victims as "innocent civilians," disputing the framing offered by the group claiming responsibility.
In the aftermath, local residents reacted with anger toward the government and security forces, whom they blamed for failing to prevent continued attacks in the capital. Some residents attacked police and other security responders who arrived at the scene, reflecting broader frustration over a perceived inability of authorities to protect civilian areas of Baghdad from recurring bombings.
Iraqi political figures responded to the attack as well. Hakim al-Zamili, a Shiite lawmaker and head of Iraq's parliamentary security committee, called for a review of security procedures in the wake of the bombing. His proposals reportedly included establishing local patrols and enhancing the country's intelligence capabilities in an effort to prevent similar attacks in the future.
The bombing occurred amid a broader pattern of violence attributed to the Islamic State against Shi'ite communities in Iraq during this period, including other large-scale attacks such as the 2015 Khan Bani Saad bombing.
