2017 Sandy, Utah attack
Documents violence · domestic violence · crimes against children · suicide — written to inform, not to shock.

On June 6, 2017, in Sandy, Utah, Jeremy Patterson, 32, rammed his truck into an SUV carrying his ex-girlfriend Memorez Rackley, 39, her two sons, and a driver who had stopped to help the family. Patterson then opened fire on the vehicle, killing Rackley and her 6-year-old son Jase, and injuring her 11-year-old son Myles and the driver's 8-year-old daughter, before killing himself with a gunshot to the head. An autopsy found no illicit drugs or alcohol in Patterson's blood.
Rackley and Patterson had been in a relationship that ended on June 1, 2017. The following day, Patterson reportedly threatened to kill Rackley's son Jase and posted revenge pornography images of Rackley on Instagram. On June 3, three days before the attack, Rackley made three separate 911 calls reporting that Patterson was threatening her and her family. Police told Patterson to stop contacting her and advised Rackley to stay with a friend until she could obtain a protective order. However, because Patterson and Rackley had not been married or lived together, police did not classify the situation as domestic violence, and Rackley was found ineligible to obtain a protective order on that basis. In the days that followed, Patterson sent Rackley private Instagram messages containing threats.
On June 5, the day before the attack, Patterson told his sister, mother, and a friend that he wanted to kill or hurt Rackley and her sons. About three hours before the shooting, an anonymous tipster — later identified as one of Patterson's friends — called 911 to report that Patterson wanted to kill his ex-girlfriend and then himself. A Draper, Utah police officer investigated the tip, but police said the information was not sufficient to prevent the attack.
On the day of the attack, Rackley and Patterson were seen arguing near Brookwood Elementary School. A woman driving an SUV stopped and let Rackley and her sons ride with her and her daughter. As they drove away, occupants attempted to call 911, but Patterson rammed the SUV with his truck and opened fire before turning the gun on himself.
In the aftermath, Sandy's community and religious leaders organized support for the Rackley family, including a memorial fund and a GoFundMe campaign. Memorez and Jase Rackley were buried in West Jordan on June 20, 2017. Police departments in Draper and Sandy said they would review their procedures for handling 911 calls and domestic violence cases involving dating partners. In early January 2018, Utah legislators introduced a bill to make people who have had a sexual relationship eligible for protective orders. The bill passed the Utah Senate unanimously on January 22, 2018, was later revised to allow confiscated weapons to be returned in some stalking cases, passed the House, and was signed into law by Governor Gary Herbert on March 19, 2018, taking effect May 8, 2018.
