On September 27, 2020, Douglas "Doug" Benefield, 58, was fatally shot at the Lakewood Ranch, Florida home of his estranged wife Ashley Benefield's mother. Doug was shot twice — once in the leg and once in the arm, with the second bullet entering his chest cavity — and died approximately one hour later at a hospital. The shooting occurred while Doug was helping Ashley pack a U-Haul truck for a planned move to Maryland with their child. Ashley's mother had taken the couple's daughter to a park, leaving Doug and Ashley alone. Ashley stated that an argument escalated, that Doug struck her in the head and attempted to keep her in a room, and that she feared for her life and shot him in self-defense before going to a neighbor's house, where the neighbor called 911.

Doug and Ashley met in August 2016 in Palm Beach, Florida, and married 13 days later; they later founded a short-lived ballet company in Charleston, South Carolina. Their daughter was born in March 2018. The relationship was marked by reported tensions, including an incident in which Doug fired a gun at the ceiling during an argument. Ashley later filed domestic violence claims alleging Doug was abusive and controlling, and also alleged he attempted to poison her and had poisoned his late wife; a judge found her account lacked a "scintilla of truth." Doug, in turn, wrote to a sheriff's office alleging Ashley had a "split personality." Ashley filed for a restraining order in May 2020, and Doug filed for divorce shortly after.

On November 4, 2020, Ashley was charged with second-degree murder and held without bail. In July 2023, a judge declined to dismiss the charges following a Stand Your Ground hearing. Her trial began July 23, 2024, at the Manatee County Judicial Center, with prosecutors arguing she fabricated abuse allegations to secure sole custody of the couple's child, and the defense arguing self-defense and "battered woman syndrome." Ashley testified that she feared for her life during the confrontation.

On July 30, 2024, after six days of trial, a jury found Ashley guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter with a firearm rather than second-degree murder. On December 3, 2024, she was sentenced to 20 years in prison followed by 10 years of probation. The case drew significant national media attention and became known as the "Black Swan murder" due to Ashley's ballet background and a reference to the 2010 film Black Swan.
