Crystal Rogers, a 35-year-old mother of five, was living in Bardstown, Kentucky, with her boyfriend, Brooks Houck, their two-year-old son, and her other children when she was last seen on July 3, 2015. Houck, the last person known to have seen her, said she had been on her phone when he went to bed and was gone by morning, her car no longer in the driveway. Two days later, her 2007 Chevrolet Impala was found parked with a flat tire near mile marker 14 of the Bluegrass Parkway, keys in the ignition and her purse and cellphone inside; she was reported missing by her mother that same day.

Rogers' family was vocal in suspecting Houck; her sister said he had not offered to help search. On July 8, 2015, Houck was questioned by the Nelson County Sheriff's Office; his brother, then a Bardstown police officer, called during the interview and told him not to speak with police, and was later called to testify before a grand jury. He took a polygraph test arranged by the FBI on July 20, 2015; the examiner reported "grave concerns" about the results to Bardstown's police chief. On October 16, 2015, Houck's brother was fired from the police department, and Houck was officially named a suspect. Investigators also focused on a white Buick a private investigator found parked at the Houck farm the night Rogers disappeared; the car, owned by Houck's grandmother, was sold weeks later, and she was subpoenaed amid concern it had been used to dispose of a body. She refused to testify; a judge sealed the proceedings, and in August 2016 police searched her home and Houck's brother's for DNA.

Despite searches and a $100,000 reward, Rogers was not found. Sheriff Ramon Pineiroa, appointed in 2019, said his agency had a good idea what happened to Rogers but needed more evidence to arrest anyone. Sixteen months after Rogers disappeared, her father, 54-year-old Tommy Ballard, was shot once in the chest and killed on November 19, 2016, while hunting on his property with his 12-year-old grandson, Rogers' eldest son. Police cleared the grandson of foul play and ruled out suicide, since Ballard's gun was never fired; the FBI calls his death an unsolved homicide authorities believe is linked to Rogers' disappearance. The FBI searched Bardstown in August 2020 and again in August 2021, the latter in the Woodlawn Springs subdivision, where a construction company owned by Houck had built houses; on August 27, 2021, it announced recovering an "item of interest" from concrete at one home and said residents had information about the case.

In September 2023, a Nelson County grand jury indicted Joseph Lawson on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and complicity in tampering with physical evidence; the indictment did not name a victim, though its dates corresponded to Rogers' disappearance. Houck was arrested and, on October 5, 2023, arraigned on a murder charge; investigators said a gun sold by Houck's brother under an assumed name could match the weapon that killed Ballard. In December 2023, Joseph Lawson's father, Steve Lawson, was arrested and indicted on a charge of conspiracy to commit murder. In May 2025, Steve Lawson was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and tampering with physical evidence and sentenced to 17 years in prison. In July 2025, Houck was found guilty of Rogers' murder and complicity in tampering with physical evidence, and Joseph Lawson was convicted on the same charges. On September 17, Houck was sentenced to life in prison and Joseph Lawson to 25 years. Rogers has never been found, and authorities presume her dead.
