Ben McDaniel, a 30-year-old diver from Memphis, Tennessee, was reported missing on August 20, 2010, after employees at the dive shop at Vortex Spring, a cave-diving spring north of Ponce de Leon, Florida, noticed his truck had sat in the lot for two days. He had last been seen on the evening of August 18, entering a cave beginning 58 feet below the spring's surface. He was initially believed to have drowned, and his parents believe his body remains in an inaccessible part of the cave, but no trace of him has ever been found. Florida issued his family a death certificate in 2013.

McDaniel was born on April 15, 1980, in Collierville, Tennessee, the oldest of three sons. In the late 2000s his marriage ended in divorce, his construction business failed and left him nearly $50,000 in tax debt, and he was grieving his younger brother, who died in 2008 at 22; that death was initially attributed to a stroke but was later found to be a drug overdose. At his parents' suggestion he took a sabbatical, moving with his dog in April 2010 into the family's beach house in Santa Rosa Beach, on Florida's Emerald Coast. An avid diver since age 15, he became a regular at Vortex Spring, where employees considered him skilled but overconfident, and where he had reportedly been exploring its cave system despite lacking the required certification.

In mid-August 2010, McDaniel spent a week visiting Tennessee, telling his parents and girlfriend he was optimistic about becoming a dive instructor and starting a diving business. He returned to Florida the weekend of August 14-15, leaving his parents a thank-you letter. On August 18, he dove once at Vortex Spring, filled his tanks, and spent the afternoon making notes in his dive log. That evening he called his mother, then went back into the water around 7:30 p.m. wearing a helmet and lights, suggesting he meant to enter the cave; a dive shop employee unlocked the gate for him. No one is known to have seen him since.

Sheriff's deputies sealed off the spring and found no signs of a struggle; McDaniel's wallet, holding about $1,100 in cash, and his phone were left in his truck, and his dog was found unfed at the beach house. Cadaver dogs alerted on the water's surface, and searchers — eventually 16 divers over 36 days — scoured the cave without finding McDaniel. Two of his tanks, recovered near the entrance, held ordinary rather than cave-diving air, which struck some searchers as inconsistent with a deep dive. A recovery specialist dove roughly 1,700 feet into the cave and concluded that McDaniel, at 6 feet 1 inch and 210 pounds, could not have passed through some of its narrower restrictions. Land and water searches, including tests for signs of decomposition nearby, also found nothing.

McDaniel's parents offered a reward, eventually raised to $30,000, for recovery of his body, but rescinded it in 2012 after a diver died in the cave while apparently seeking it. By 2011, his parents had begun to consider that foul play, not an accident, caused his disappearance, and hired a private investigator. Some searchers have also raised the possibility that McDaniel staged his own disappearance to escape his recent troubles, a theory his parents reject, citing the dog and girlfriend he left behind. A 2012 documentary, Ben's Vortex, examined all three theories; its filmmakers concluded from his dive logs and map that he had ventured very deep into the cave. No one has been named a suspect, and the case remains unresolved.
