2022 Tulsa hospital shooting
Documents violence · suicide — written to inform, not to shock.

On June 1, 2022, a shooting occurred in the Natalie Building, part of the Saint Francis Hospital campus in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The gunman, later identified as 45-year-old Michael Louis (also known as Michelet Louis) of Muskogee, opened fire on the building's second floor, in an orthopedic facility, killing four people and injuring an unspecified number of others before turning the gun on himself.
According to police accounts, Louis entered the building through a second-floor entrance connected to a public parking garage. Law enforcement received a report of a person with a firearm inside the Natalie Medical Building at around 4:56 p.m. Responding officers heard gunshots and moved toward the second floor; officers believe the final shot was fired around 4:58 p.m., coinciding with a gunshot heard as they called out identifying themselves as Tulsa police. Just before 5:00 p.m. CDT, the Tulsa Police Department confirmed the shooter had died of what they believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A total of 37 spent bullet casings were recovered from the scene. Police also notified the Muskogee Police Department of a possible bomb threat in a Muskogee residential area.
The four people killed were Dr. Preston John Phillips, 59; Dr. Stephanie Jolene Husen, 48; medical assistant Amanda Dawn Glenn, 40; and William Lee Love, 73, the husband of a patient. Louis was armed with a semi-automatic pistol and an AR-15-style firearm, reportedly purchased on May 29 and June 1, respectively. He had previously lived in Newark, New Jersey, before relocating to Oklahoma in the mid-2010s, with earlier residences in Fort Smith, Arkansas; Rochester, New York; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin said Louis had undergone back surgery performed by Dr. Phillips on May 19 and had continued to experience pain afterward, for which he had repeatedly called the office seeking relief. He blamed Phillips for his ongoing pain. A letter found on Louis stated that while Phillips was his intended target, others "who got in his way" would also be killed. Tulsa Police Captain Richard Meulenberg described the attack as deliberate rather than random, stating Louis had specifically chosen to come to the hospital.
In the aftermath, fundraising efforts were established for victims and their families, including a Saint Francis Employee Emergency Fund through the Tulsa Community Foundation and at least one GoFundMe campaign. Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt called the shooting "a senseless act of violence and hatred," and Tulsa Mayor G. T. Bynum expressed gratitude toward first responders. The shooting also prompted broader discussion among physicians, particularly Black orthopedic surgeons, and organizations such as the J.R. Gladden Society and National Nurses United regarding threats and violence faced by healthcare workers nationally.
